Today I would like to show you a little something I have been working on in between some orders. These are the types of things I get done during the morning/afternoon. These things are easy enough for me to work on while at the day job while I answer the phone. New items are also created all the time for custom orders. If the new item I make for an order turns out really well or fits in with the other items in the shop I list it in the shop. I feel the store is evolving all the time.

This new item is a sweet little headband. This is an adult size but can be done in a wide range of sizes since they are all custom made.

As you can see…it is modeled by the creepy styrofoam head Lucinda. Her drawn on makeup just adds to the creepy levels.

The headband has three hand made satin flowers. This is the same flower style as the carnation bouquet in the shop. They are able to spread open a little bit more on the headband so they don’t look as much like a carnation. For the first headband I used two medium pink flowers and one turquoise with white polka dots flower. The headband itself is a grey zig zag stretchable knit ribbon. There is also an elastic band to make sure it fits well!

The headband is designed to sit more toward the left side but can be created in the middle/the left /the right. More or less flowers can be used as well but I thought three was just the right number.

I have a whole bunch of fun fabric ribbon including some that are crocheted! I also plan on creating these with a wide variety of fabrics and colors for the flowers. Keep an eye out for these in the shop. I hope to get them up this weekend!

In other news…I can’t believe tomorrow is already Friday!!

The first set that was finished was this great peacock theme wedding set. I love the colors together and the vintage beads are such a nice touch. The bride sent a necklace that was her grandma’s for us to incorporate into the pieces. Take a look for yourself:

There are little glass beads sewn into the felt flowers. There are also some used as the top ‘button’ on the stems. This bride did not have any bridesmaid bouquets but there were a bunch of boutonnieres and corsage.

Here is a pile of peacock boutonnieres, or would it be a flock? A school of boutonnieres? Who knows!

Working with all of the brides’ color combinations are a lot of fun. I sometimes get to do combinations that I normally wouldn’t. This next set of corsages would be a great example. The colors are gray, bamboo green and apricot orange. The fourth piece is a hair clip for the flower girl. A very unique and fun set.

I also got some boutonnieres and corsages finished up using our super sweet 3-D flower buttons. I love these things. There is a mix of blue and white and then they are wrapped in a light blue ribbon.

The last little update for the weekend is the start of a great set of accessories for a photo shoot. These items will be used for an engagement session, how cute are these!?

This is just a glimpse of this order. The garland is a mix of cream, ivory, blush, tea stain. There are also some pomanders in the mix and a lot of great vintage ribbon.

A little over two weeks ago, it was a normal day at work (the day job that is). I was busy working on some kits to get mailed off to customers when a co-worker asked if I had seen the cat. This isn’t that strange of a question for this office. On any given day there is usually at least one four-legged animal running around here. You see, the office is pretty laid back and some people bring their dogs in to hang out with them. I think it makes the office a fun place to be.

I had not seen the cat though and being an animal lover, I was intrigued. I went back to her desk and in a box was the smallest kitten ever. I Ooo’d and Ahh’d for a few minutes and then was shocked by the story of where the kitten came from.

This brave little girl started her day out 20 miles from the office. My co-worker said when she got in her truck to come to work she heard little kitten meows. She looked under the truck, behind the truck; no kitten. She got in and started driving. The whole way to the office she kept hearing the kitten and even when she stopped along the road there was no critter to be found. When she got in to the office, she had someone crawl under the truck to look for her. Finally, up on the axle of the truck sat a precious little black and white kitten.

She has already started to change colors a bit. Her solid black is now black with some brown/reddish color stripes.

No one knows how long she had been there, where she came from or how she stayed there the whole time. She was so dehydrated and starving. I felt so bad for her. Poor little girl was most likely dumped off at my co-workers home. (She said people drop off unwanted animals there all the time. What a horrible thing!). Everyone wanted the kitten but no one could take her home. My puppies would not appreciate me bringing home a cat, that would NOT fly! We tried to find her a home but time after time it fell through. By the end of the day, it was suggested that she became the office cat. I was all for that and everyone else was open to the idea.

We all thought the kitten was a boy, not exactly sure why. She got the name Chad the first day. The next day I took little Chad to the vet. She got an exam and everything looked fine, other than the fleas! We were also told that Chad…was a girl. She was also only 4 weeks old and needed a lot of love, food, water and a stable environment. We got her all of the necessities and then lots of toys of course. Everyone calls her Kitty (not so original!) but to me, she is still Chad.

I have never seen a kitten as calm and cuddly as she is. With her restored energy and health she still isn’t crazy kitten like most are. She runs around all day while everyone is at the office and then at night she roams around. Each day she gets a little more brave (She can now jump the gate..must rethink that situation) and goes all over the office by herself. She doesn’t go too far away since she is a very people loving cat. There have only been a few times that I couldn’t find her (the bell on her collar helps so much) but all I have to do is shake the treat bag and she comes flying back to you.

In the past couple of weeks she has already gained a pound! I am so glad we were able to save her as she truly is a precious little kitten.

As you can see…she has made herself at home. If you can’t find the kitten, this is usually where she is. It definitely makes coming to work a lot better!

The first item is the Moss and Button Pomander. This is a great flower girl alternative or could even be used for bridesmaids. I am working on an order right now where the bridesmaids will have pomanders instead of bouquets (they will be felt pomanders). With the right wedding theme/overall feel I think it would look stunning and perfectly whimsical.

There are some great glittered leaf buttons, bright fall colors and a chocolate brown satin ribbon to finish it off. I like how the buttons pop against the moss. The final size is around 5.5 inches. I snapped a few more photos including some a little closer so you can see detail. Check them out!

I had wanted to get this post up over lunch but I ended up heading to the pet store to buy some spoiled dogs their Dingo’s. Which is actually some of what I planned on writing about. The first ‘about us’ post will be about the furry critters that have become the RBK mascots. Now you may think the RBK Creations mascot would be a cat…while we have no cats. Instead there are three pups that roam around the studio and keep us company while we work away.

Let me introduce you to them!

Rascal is the oldest. He just turned 11 a few months ago. He is definitely my buddy. A good lap dog (when he wants to be).

In his old age he has become more calm but he has such a great personality. He can be found keeping my feet warm under my desk or every once in awhile sitting on my lap. Watch out though, when his hair gets too long and it is time for the groomer, he sure does get grouchy!

Next in line is Roxanne. She goes by Baby Girl though. She is definitely the little princess. The little girl also has the personality of a diva! Her way or the highway.

And then there is Remington. He goes by Remy. He is a chocolate schnauzer which is more rare than the salt and pepper variety. Since he is a special color he also thinks he is extra special. I have never seen a dog act the way he does. He is a human trapped in a little dog body.

It is a crazy trio but they make me smile every day! Here are a few more photos of the fur babies and their adventures. I recently bought a little digital camera that goes on Remy’s collar. It automatically takes photos. A dog’s eye view. So I am sure as time goes by there will be plenty more photos that Remy took himself!

Remy and Roxanne at Dog Bowl last year. He is such a photo creeper. They had a good time but were not very social with all the other dogs running around. Remy did like the band that was playing though. He would just sit and watch them play.

Rascal and Remy cuddle time! They may not act like friends during the day but at night their are best buds. This is a common sight in the studio! I think when Remy grows up he wants to be just like his big brother. Monkey see…monkey do.

And the last photo: There is nothing like lounging in the sun by some buttons! What a cutie!

The first order we finished was a great color combination for a bride in Australia. Our Australian brides have been so fun to work with! The colors are inspired by a plant called the Australian Bush. There is a pink, green and silver color incorporated into the bouquets. We also included a lot of sparkle and ‘bling’.

This is the bride’s bouquet. I love the intricate stitching on the middle flower and the rhinestone button on the bottom flower!

I also got a good start on a Satin Bouquet order. This is also a great color combination. It is red, black, gold and leopard print! Very sassy! I was able to find a great leopard print satin as well as some leopard ribbon that will be a nice accent. I was able to finish up the toss bouquet, bride bouquet and the pillow was made a couple of weeks ago. Once the order is completed, I will post those as it will definitely be a fun mix!

I added some ivory felt accent flowers into the bride bouquet.

I have been working with someone locally to create a bouquet for a photo shoot she is doing. I showed a teaser last week of her bouquet. This weekend I was able to get it finished up! I am going to meet with her tomorrow and can’t wait for her to see it in person. It is really a jewel tone dream!

It is hard to see in the small photo, but there are some great rhinestone buttons in this bouquet as well. (note to self, fix blog layout to allow larger photos!!!)

Another order I was able to start on was a fall order. There will be shades of orange, purple, ivory and other fall colors. The bridesmaids will be carrying a felt pomander that will be accented with tulle and stems of buttons. I was able to get one of them started (no tulle or buttons yet). The bride’s bouquet will be embroidered.

These are a lot of fun to make!

Lastly, I was able to start on a cherry blossom inspired wedding. For some of the pieces in her order I used these awesome 3-D buttons I have. There are shades of pink, a turquoise color and brown. She wanted the bouquet very full so we opted for a satin collar around the bouquet. The satin is a very pretty medium pink color. I should have the other pieces done soon as well. I really love these colors together!

It was such a sunny day yesterday everything looks so bright. I guess that is what you get with the 100 degree Texas sun!

I hope everyone else had a good weekend! It was definitely more productive for us as the weather was too warm to want to go outside! This next bride had so many personal touches added to her bouquet. I was so happy to see the photos from her big day. The smile on her face, made me smile. Kelda and Callum met on MySpace, but actually realized that they had a few friends in common! The only lived nine miles apart and had never met until then. They are also in the same field of work. It is crazy how the world works sometimes! 

Read on as Kelda explains her 12-28-09 wedding and what went in to planning it.   

 What was the theme of your wedding? What colors did you use/what was the overall feel of the big day? 

“There wasn’t really a theme – We’re not as ‘theme-y’ in Scotland as you are in the United States, but quirky probably sums it up. It was winter time, which most people don’t go for. The Bridesmaid Dresses were a crisp wintery navy blue colour too. We had the button bouquets. We had a humanist wedding (and basically wrote the whole service so it was quite fun and laid back. 

I play in a brass band and have done so since I was a kid. So we had my brass band play Christmas carols as the guests arrived. Then while I walked down the aisle, they played a Scottish song, Caledonia. While we signed the register they played another tune about a cat (we have a pet cat!) and on our way out, they played the James Bond Theme.  

Because we got engaged at the Taj Mahal, our table names were Bollywood film names (all love stories!) 

Our daytime favours, only for the females, were wooden Christmas tree baubles with the date of our wedding on them. And we had a roulette table at the evening reception, rather than favours.” 

What was the location of your wedding? 

“Snowy Scotland! We got married at the Burnhouse Manor Hotel in Ayrshire, Scotland on a gorgeous winter, snowy day.”
 

What was your favorite part of planning the wedding? 

“Do you know, I can’t pick anything in particular, but the bouquets were definitely up there with planning the ceremony, and picking the brass band tunes, and Bollywood table names and deciding to have the roulette table! These little things I found more fun than picking the dress and the venue I’d say!” 

What types of items did you receive from RBK Creations? What was your favorite piece?  

“We had my bouquet, 4 Bridesmaid Bouquets and 2 Flower Girl Bouquets 

I loved my bouquet because you added in lace leaves from my Gran’s wedding dress veil and buttons and cufflinks that were my grandpa’s (both who have passed away) into my bouquet! 

I loved the flower girl bouquets because you added in little snowmen buttons. 

Also, you had colour matched everything to the dress and the tartan which was brilliant.” (The colors we used were: Blue, green, yellow, orange, purple and ivory/whites. The bouquets were a fun mix of colors. The tartan was very inspiring.) 

How did you come across RBK Creations? 

“I think I had seen the idea of button bouquets or material bouquets on Offbeat Bride. When I googled it, your Flickr page came up. From there, I found your Etsy Page and I fell in love with your stuff!”

The flowers measure at about 7 inches wide and have 5 layers of embroidered felt. The ribbon hanging off is for rings, as these flower girls will be playing the part of ring bearers as well. This is a great option for the couples that don’t have a young boy or relative to be a ring bearer.

These can be created in any color. I am really liking the color that this bride has picked for her wedding. The pink and green are so sweet together and the white is a nice accent. It was a lot of fun doing the stitching on these flowers (there are two of them).

I just finished a great order. The start of this order goes all the way back to October when we did the Ft. Worth Bridal/Quinceañera Show. We met with a lot of mothers and daughers planning for their big birthday celebration. Recently, we were contacted by one of those mothers who was still very interested in a bouquet. I put a rush on the order to get her bouquet done for her professional photos. I did a few new items as well, including the guest book above. I also created a larger pillow, for the shoe ceremony (I have been learning so much about the traditions, it is a lot of fun!) and a custom photo album so she can have a matching book to keep all the photos.

I have been working with a bride in Portugal. I made a few flowergirl headbands and then two large flowers for them to carry. Instead of a ring bearer, they will be having two flower girls that will carry a ring each. I will post the photos of the flowers later this week.

I have been working with someone locally who is doing an anniversary photo shoot. She was inspired by a gorgeous wedding that used jewel tones. It is a great mix of colors! I should have more photos of the finished bouquet on next monday’s weekend update.

This is a new color combination we are working on. This is for a super sweet bride in Australia. Should also have more photos of this next week! Can’t wait to see it all come together.

This order got shipped out! Spring Green, Dark Brown and White. This order is on its way to Canada right now! Can’t wait for her to see it all.

Lastly, this order was finished recently. Another great color combination! I love the vintage feel to these colors.
